Flower Bombs Video & Interview

We collaborated with an incredible group of individuals to create a video for The Flower Bombs project. Our team consisted of Murray Clement of Electroscope on video, Angel Acevedo on photography, and us Dawl’s as the Flower Bombers. We had a lot of fun collaborating on this and are fascinated by the final video! We hope you enjoy it as well.

Arlene was also pleasantly surprised to be contacted by Amanda McCorquodale, Associate Editor at The Huffington Post Miami, who was interested in a write up about Flower Bombs. What inspired Flower Bombs?
Arlene Delgado: Flower Bombs is a guerrilla art initiative that explores the karma and power of public art through positive messaging. The symbol of the flower growing out of a bomb represents beauty in unexpected places — which is what street art is all about. For the first series of posters I used empowering quotes from the tarot that illustrate that no matter what hand you are dealt in life, something positive can always be taken from it.

For instance, The Devil. This is a card that will send chills down anyone’s spine. The meaning taken from it instead is: There is no devil except the one you create; a powerful message relaying the power of our thoughts. The idea is for any person to come across a Flower Bombs poster and for it to speak to them, empower them, and lift their spirits.

What’s each of your backgrounds?
My background is in art and graphic design. Diamari’s background is in integrated media and marketing. We both work in our respective fields as well as running our own sites, ArleneDelgado.com and DiamariTorres.com. We also run our business Dawl Creative, a creative design boutique we started in 2011.

How did you get involved in wheat pasting?
The idea was to get the messages out there in a way that is not toxic to the environment. Wheat paste is an environmentally non-acidic way of posting these messages. It is easy to remove and breaks down over time so naturally it felt like the best option. In the future we hope to explore other mediums as well, such as using water-based paint.

Why do you think Miamians need to see the messages on your posters?
I feel that it is not just Miamians that need to hear/see the affirmations. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with advertisements of the media, sometimes against our will, it is nice to come across a design that isn’t trying to sell us anything. Something that serves as a balm to our spirit and that speaks to us on a non-consumer level.

What is your goal for the project?
The goal of the project is to fill the world with positive affirmations through beautiful non-commercial design for no reason other than to make people feel good and to help them manifest positive life changes. I imagine a world where people are surrounded by more beauty and art than consumerist messages.

We would like for the project to expand beyond us and beyond Miami. The posters are available for download so that anyone can print them and post them in their cities -if they believe in the messages behind them. In this way anyone can be a “Flower Bomber”. We also would like for people to submit their own designs. Right now we’re starting our second series that will be based on geniuses throughout history. We already have our first beautifully designed submission that can be seen and downloaded on our Flickr set.
